Purpose and Scope

 

The Lead Manufacturing Engineer applies advanced technical knowledge and expertise to design, develop, program, and launch products from concept to production, with a strong emphasis on expert-level CNC programming and machining process development for new products.

 

Responsibilities

 

    • Lead development of manufacturing processes from customer bid packages, prints, and specifications
    • Develop and own CNC programs for new products, including tool selection, workholding, cutting parameters, and cycle time optimization
    • Serve as the subject matter expert for CNC programming, including multi-axis machining and complex geometries with tight tolerances
    • Build routing, process flows, and production plans that support quoting and execution
    • Support capital equipment selection, justification, and implementation
    • Supports safety, quality, delivery, and cost targets by identifying and implementing continuous improvement projects to reduce equipment downtime, increase productivity, reduce perishable tooling costs, and reduce scrap, aligning with yearly plant metrics
    • Aids engineering team members in problem-solving and corrective action for manufacturing controls processes as needed. Shares and documents lessons learned with team members
    • Work cross-functionally with Operations, Quality, Maintenance, and Supply Chain
    • Develop and validate work instructions, PFMEAs, control plans, and process documentation
    • Ensure processes meet industry standards (ISO 9001, AS9100, IATF 16949, others as applicable)
    • Troubleshoot production issues and drive root cause / corrective actions
    • Analyze and calculate machine throughput, material needs, and manufacturing processes
    • Document and standardize manufacturing processes and machine capabilities for new and existing products
    • Collaborate with sales and business development teams to ensure accurate and competitive bids
    • Drive new product introduction from concept through production launch, including prove-out and capability validation
    • Mentor and support team members in CNC programming and machining best practices
    • Contributes to the Plant's goal of reducing environmental impact annually

 

Technical/Functional skills:

 

    • Demonstrated CNC programming experience, including multi-axis machining (3, 4, and 5-axis), complex part geometry, and tight tolerance manufacturing
    • Experience with CAM software (Mastercam, NX, Fusion 360, or equivalent) for toolpath development and simulation
    • Deep understanding of machining fundamentals including cutting theory, tooling, workholding, and cycle time optimization
    • Experience working in a precision manufacturing environment, preferably in aerospace, defense, or automotive industries
    • Data analysis skills using Minitab or JMP to perform process capability studies and to drive continuous process improvements
    • Ability to do problem solving using various methods such as 5-Why, fishbone diagrams, DMAIC, etc. to determine root cause and implement corrective actions
    • Knowledge/Interpretation of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances (GD&T)
    • Experience with computer aided design packages such as Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks
    • Demonstrated computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
    • Attention to detail and self-motivation skills
    • Ability to manage multiple projects
    • Team player with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with peers, managers, and the shop floor workforce

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Associate’s degree in engineering AND nine years of experience in a manufacturing environment, including CNC programming and process development

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Bachelor’s degree in engineering AND seven years of experience as a Manufacturing Engineer in a manufacturing environment

OR

Master’s degree in engineering AND five years of experience as a manufacturing engineer in a manufacturing environment

Demonstrated experience leading CNC programming and machining strategy for new product introduction
