Purpose

This role supports the advancement of refractory performance, reliability, and cost efficiency across all operating facilities. The incumbent will assist in the evaluation, selection, procurement, and application of refractory materials, consumables, and related equipment across multiple business units.
Working under guidance from senior engineers and corporate technical leadership, this position contributes to improvements in refractory systems through data analysis, field support, and collaboration with operations, maintenance, procurement, and suppliers. The role also helps standardize best practices across sites and supports safe and effective installation and maintenance of refractory systems.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Support enforcement of company safety policies and promote proper housekeeping practices across all refractory-related activities.
  • Assist in managing refractory and consumable inventories across multiple facilities to ensure operational continuity while minimizing carrying costs.
  • Perform routine data analysis to track refractory usage, performance, and cost trends; support development of improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in failure investigations and root cause analysis efforts; contribute to implementation and follow-up of corrective actions.
  • Monitor refractory performance and help identify opportunities for improvement in materials, installation practices, and operational usage.
  • Work with operating departments to recognize and report deviations in practices that may negatively impact refractory performance.
  • Support supplier performance management by collecting data, participating in reviews, and tracking corrective action effectiveness.
  • Assist in evaluating refractory products and technologies, including benchmarking and trials across facilities.
  • Collaborate with procurement and corporate sourcing to support supplier evaluations and identify cost and performance advantages.
  • Utilize business systems and tools for tracking material usage, inventory, and cost control.
  • Provide field support for refractory installation, maintenance, and inspection activities across facilities as needed.
  • Assist in coordinating internal personnel and contractors involved in refractory work, ensuring adherence to safety and quality expectations.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of standard work instructions and best practices for refractory installation, inspection, and care.
  • Support training and knowledge-sharing efforts to promote consistent refractory practices across the organization.
  • Manage small to mid-scale projects including capital appropriates, or funding when required.

 

Minimum requirements: 

  • Associate Degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Technology, or related engineering degree with at least 2 years' experience in metals manufacturing and heavy industrial environment.

 

Preferred requirements: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Technology, or related engineering degree with experience in a refractory internship at Metallus.
