Purpose
Defines and governs the Metallus Quality Management System to ensure business standards and processes meet ISO based, or equivalent, requirements and support consistent, scalable execution.
Utilize expert knowledge of customer, industry, international quality standards, manufacturing processes, problem solving, lean tools, project management, and team facilitation to direct and assigned teams in setting goals, and strategic initiatives to better define and improve manufacturing and business process quality management systems so Metallus we fulfills the expectations of our markets, customers, and support the future growth of our business.
Leads and mentors teams and other associates in the business through both direct and indirect leadership, including setting clear expectations, priortizing work, and holding team members accountable for performance, in interpreting standard requirements and intent and translating them into terms that the business can understand and fulfill in the most cost effective, value-added manner consistent with our management, customer, and shareholder needs. This is done based on technical and subject matter expertise, in-depth understanding of quality systems and our overall business, and critical thinking that leads to optimal solutions which introduces the lowest impact and risk, but with enhanced value for our business from our management's perspective.
Develops recommendations and leads internal process improvement and enhancement of quality systems. Leads, directs, or conducts audit assessments, performs statistical analysis and recommends process controls to improve all facets of business performance. Facilitates or leads quality problem-solving teams for systemic improvements. Evaluates performance and system health signals to create strategic proposals to management and senior management for initiatives to improve quality and business performance.
This role has direct responsibility for building, developing, and leading a high performing quality systems team, ensuring appropriate capability, engagement, accountability, and succession to support current and future business needs.
Responsibilities
- Evaluates business need and risk, guides and/or conducts extensive studies or pilots that effectively develop and/or apply new elements or customer specific requirements to the quality management system. Serves as a key quality system representative, on both the Quality Management System Team and assigned area(s) to ensure compliance to new or current quality system requirements.
- Analyzes, interprets and recommends/applies quality system requirements to obtain and maintain customer and registrar approval of our quality system. This requires quality system expertise, business knowledge and the ability to interpret and communicate customer needs throughout relevant areas of the business and to obtain agreement in the business to meet these needs. Also recommends long term registration status goals to best position the business to meet its plan.
- Leads, facilitates, and mentors direct reports and cross-functional teams others through the problem solving process to obtain deep root cause analysis and effective interplant corrective actions to fulfill and enhance quality management system processes and maintain the integrity of our corrective action system.
- Determines best quality indices to use and mentors and develops team members others in quality system and performance analysis to focus quality efforts in the business on those things that directly contribute to meeting business goals and objectives. Analyzing and reporting of manufacturing information such as yield, cost of quality, complaints, CAR/PAR's, etc. to determine and recommend where to best apply resources for improvement of business results and to satisfy customers.
- Able to apply and mentor others in the use of consistent and optimal statistical techniques, problem-solving, and other tools of quality (such as control plans, FMEA's, flow charts, graphical analysis, capability analysis, regression analysis, etc.). Maintenance of certifications of expertise in the field of quality such as the ASQ Certified Quality Auditor or Engineer designation. Leading the business in various applications of quality system principles such, as APQP.
- Is an expert or administers the internal quality system audit process. Is a lead auditor for the process of quality system auditing and verification of corrective actions, either internally or at supplier facilities. Uses auditing skills, up to date knowledge of primary quality system standards, lead assessor training, lead assessor planning and control of audit teams, timely reporting of findings & understanding of key control characteristics in the business. Performs consulting activities by recommending possible solutions to ensure compliance to stated requirements.
- Leads and develops the quality system organization by owning talent management, performance accountability, and resource prioritization to ensure sustained capability, engagement, and execution of the quality management system in support of business objectives.
- Initiates or provides key leadership for complex projects, including assigning resources, setting expectations, and ensuring accountability for results.
- Effectively lead management of change initiatives both internally and those requiring customer approval.
- Company and QS representative on customer audits critical to maintaining existing business and acquiring new business.
- This role is both a senior technical contributor and a people manager, requiring the ability to balance hands on technical leadership with effective team leadership and talent development.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering with 12 years of experience in quality management, quality systems, leading audits, managing compliance, or manufacturing.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in materials engineering with 15 years of experience in quality management, quality systems, leading audits, managing compliance, or manufacturing.
