Purpose

The Production Planning Lead/Manager is responsible for designing each heat to meet customer chemistry, testing and quality requirements while also managing cost to produce and efficiency through manufacturing. The individual is the technical resource in the development and assignment of planned heat recipes necessary for all heats at the Faircrest Steel Plant.  These recipes account for scrap, melt and refiner practices, heat transitions, caster optimization, alloys and heat testing.

 

The Production Planning Lead/Manager will lead continuous improvement efforts and data analysis to ensure the scheduling and engineering of the steel making process is at its highest product quality and the lowest production cost. They provide engineering analysis and support to various functions throughout the business including but not limited to Sales, Demand Planning, and Met QA. This position must be able to communicate effectively to a diverse group of departments throughout the company, including Manufacturing, Sales, Quality, and Supply Chain.

 

Responsibilities

  • This position impacts all Faircrest scrap, melt, refine and cast production, striving for the highest product quality at the lowest processing cost. The output of this role directly influences manufacturing cost, melt asset utilization, inventory levels, product quality, and on-time delivery of orders.
  • Develop and assign heat recipes (melting/refining practices) necessary to each heat at the Faircrest Steel Plant. These schedules must reflect the appropriate melting/refining/casting instructions, specify testing required to satisfy all customer requirements and to optimize product quality.
  • Approve lineups created by the Melt Scheduler and collaborate with the Melt Scheduler daily to identify and reduce/eliminate issues with capability, cost and quality in the melt plan
  • Work with the Melt Scheduler to improve and optimize the plan within the given customer and manufacturing constraints.
  • Adapt and accommodate deviations to the plan in an ever-changing environment to meet customer delivery or production schedule requirements. Must maintain sufficient approved lineup ahead of manufacturing to ensure an efficient lineup through upset conditions.
  • Manage scrap, melt, and heat testing related projects as they pertain to Production Planning activities.
  • Engineer bloom cut solutions for the Faircrest caster based on customer order requirements.
  • Manage low volume and heat lot grade queue. Use technical knowledge and collaborate with Product Management team to determine if we are capable to produce customer orders before orders are confirmed.
  • Assure that the appropriate industry standards, metallurgical and area processing standards are adhered to in developing the order processing from melting through rolling and finishing. These standards include, but are not limited to: ISO, ASTM and AMS industry standards, Metallurgical Processing Standards, Process Metallurgical QA Area Standards, FSP - Steelmaking Area Standards, and Order Processing Standards.
  • Support growth and differentiation as the technical expert in chemistry and heat testing capabilities with the Front Ends (Sales, Customer Relationship Managers). May also participate in Application Development and New Business Development cross functional teams.
  • Lead and support Continuous Improvement activities and projects within Production Planning.
  • Determine compatibility between customer orders and existing material considering chemistry, testing and yield requirements, and allocate existing material to customer orders.
  • Coach, train, and mentor the less specialized associates that perform similar engineering and scheduling functions.
  • Provide technical decision-making support through data analysis and/or query management for various Supply Chain teams, Sales, Manufacturing, and Met QA. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 12 years of experience in metallurgical quality assurance or manufacturing
  • Associate degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Metallurgy, or Business with 9 years of experience in metallurgical quality assurance or manufacturing
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Metallurgy, or Business with 7 years of experience in metallurgical quality assurance or manufacturing

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 17 years of experience in metallurgy, metallurgical quality assurance, or manufacturing within a melt shop
  • Associate degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Metallurgy with 14 years of experience in metallurgy, metallurgical quality assurance, or manufacturing within a melt shop
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Metallurgy with 12 years of experience in metallurgy, metallurgical quality assurance, or manufacturing within a melt shop
