Purpose

Steel manufacturing demands substantial asset investment, with annual maintenance costs exceeding one hundred million dollars. This role is key to lowering those costs and ensuring efficient use of our maintenance and contractor resources.
  
The role of the Planner/Scheduler is to improve workforce effectiveness and work quality by anticipating and eliminating potential delays through proactive planning and coordination of manpower, parts and materials, and equipment access. The position is responsible for planning future work; ensuring Manufacturing has a sufficient backlog of tasks that are fully planned, approved, and ready for execution; using personal experience and closed backlog to develop work plans that avoid potential delays and quality or safety issues; and scheduling work by loading labor hours and providing the workforce with sufficient assignments for their shifts.

 

Responsibilities

1.    Job Plan Development

  • Defines required materials, spare parts, special tools, and equipment necessary to execute work efficiently.
  • Estimates labor hours and craft requirements using planning standards and experience.
  • Builds task level job plans that clearly define work steps, safety considerations, quality requirements, and execution sequence.
  • Assembles complete work packages including job plans, permits, drawings, lockout requirements, special instructions, and supporting documentation.
  • Identifies and drives revisions to PMs, job plans, BOMs, and work instructions to improve future execution.

 

2.    Scheduling

  • Supports scheduling functions by loading and leveling planned work to available labor capacity.
  • Schedules daily and weekly work in the scheduling tool for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Maintains outage and shutdown calendars; supports long range planning for major work and outages.

 

3.    Work Planning and Backlog Management

  • Converts approved service requests into fully planned work orders, ensuring correct asset hierarchy, failure codes, and cost charging in Maximo.
  • Maintains a ready to work backlog, ensuring jobs are planned to a standard that supports safe, efficient execution without delays.
  • Performs field walk downs to analyze job requirements, validate scope, and identify safety, access, tooling, and sequencing needs.
  • Develops detailed job plans using BOMs, engineering drawings, historical data, and best practices.

 

4.    Collaboration and Continuous Improvements

  • Works closely with Maintenance, Operations, Engineering, Reliability, and SMEs to resolve issues related to spare parts, BOM accuracy, asset data, and work procedures.
  • Submits drawing updates and documentation changes to Engineering as required.
  • Supports plant KPIs including EHS, quality, productivity, schedule compliance, backlog health, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Performs monthly LPA audits and supports Reliability Excellence standards.
  • Additional responsibilities are defined in the Reliability Excellence RACI documents.
  • Coordinate predictive maintenance scheduling, compliance, driving corrective actions to mitigate equipment risk and unplanned failures and increase reliability.
  • Submits purchase requests for materials and services to perform planned work.

 

Technical Skills

  • Familiarity with industrial maintenance and exposure to work planning and order prioritization techniques
  • Ability to read and understand engineered drawings.
  • Trained on industrial systems: hydraulics, pneumatics, PLC, motor drives, power distribution.
  • Solid understanding of equipment assemblies, systems engineering, and maintenance best practices.
  • Prior knowledge of Maximo or CMMS.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Functional knowledge on equipment assemblies and systems engineering.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School/GED with a minimum 7 years of craftsmanship or supervisor experience in planning and scheduling work or experience with CMMS systems for work orders.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, technology, or related degree with a minimum 4 years of craftsmanship or supervisor experience in planning and scheduling work or experience with CMMS systems for work orders.
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, technology, or related degree with a minimum 2 years of craftsmanship or supervisor experience in planning and scheduling work or experience with CMMS systems for work orders.
