Purpose & Scope:
This position provides technical oversight and coordination of outsourced metallurgical testing to support product development, value-added components, quality, and manufacturing. The role is responsible for defining testing needs, selecting and managing qualified external laboratories, and ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant test results, serving as the primary technical interface between internal stakeholders and external laboratories.
Responsibilities:
- Define and document metallurgical testing requirements, methods, and acceptance criteria based on customer specifications, industry standards (ASTM, ISO, AMS, etc.), and internal requirements
- Interpret and evaluate metallurgical test results (microstructure, hardness, mechanical properties, chemistry, etc.) for accuracy and compliance
- Manage the metallurgical release of products using business and data systems (LIMS, certification systems, heat treat databases, intranet tools).
- Identify non-conforming results and coordinate investigation and resolution with internal teams and external laboratories
- Provide metallurgical guidance during program launch activities, including recommendations of testing parameters, methods, and laboratories
- Select, qualify, and manage external laboratories and provide clear technical direction to those laboratories on sample preparation, test execution, and reporting requirements
- Coordinate sample submission, tracking, and prioritization across multiple laboratories
- Monitor laboratory performance including quality, turnaround time, and capacity, and adjust workload distribution as needed to reduce delays
- Support supplier quality to ensure all laboratories maintain appropriate certifications (ISO 17025, Nadcap, etc.) and adhere to customer and industry specifications
- Participate in internal and external audits of laboratories
- Track and report on key performance indicators related to outsourced testing (i.e. turnaround times, accuracy of data, etc.)
- Support and maintain quality systems in alignment with internal and external standards (ASTM, ASM, ISO17025, ISO9001)
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of metallurgical testing methods, including metallography, hardness testing, mechanical testing, and chemical analysis
- Ability to interpret metallurgical data and identify discrepancies or non-conformances
- History working with external laboratories or contract testing providers
- Proficiency in data analysis, documentation, and reporting (Microsoft Office and lab systems)
- Strong communication skills with the ability to convey technical requirements clearly to internal teams and external partners
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and drive process improvements
- Strong project management skills, including prioritization, time management, and decision making
- Demonstrates aptitude to learn
Minimum Qualifications:
- Highschool Diploma with at least 7 years of experience in metallurgical testing, materials, quality, manufacturing, or laboratory environments
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or related degree with at least 4 years of experience in metallurgical testing, materials, quality, manufacturing, or laboratory environments
- Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or related degree with at least 2 years of experience in metallurgical testing, materials, quality, manufacturing, or laboratory environments
