Purpose & Scope:
This position supports business objectives by performing technically accurate laboratory investigations in support of customer service, quality/continuous improvement, failure analysis, and manufacturing operations. This role applies metallurgical principles, sample preparation techniques, and advanced materials characterization methods to effectively gather, analyze, and report data. Results and recommendations are communicated through written reports and direct interactions to enable timely, cost-effective solutions and improvements in product quality, performance, and profitability.
Responsibilities:
- Lead or participate in investigations of customer complaints or internal quality concerns, as directed by laboratory management.
- Develop and maintain metallurgical expertise to conduct root cause analysis in areas including failure analysis, steel processing, customer applications.
- Perform metallurgical testing, ensuring proper sample preparation (mounting, polishing, etching, grinding) and analysis using: optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), hardness testing (Rockwell, Vickers, Brinell), microstructural characterization, and phase identification
- Interpret test results and correlate findings with manufacturing processes, material specifications, and service conditions.
- Prepare clear, concise, and technically accurate reports for internal stakeholders and customers.
- Provide technical support during claim evaluations and customer communications.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams to connect laboratory findings to production processes and outcomes.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness.
- Maintain laboratory quality systems and data recording processes in compliance with internal and external (eg ISO 16949, ISO 9001, ISO 17025, Nadcap) systems.
- Ensure good housekeeping, a safe work environment, and adherence to all safety practices.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, including calibration and routine upkeep where applicable.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in engineering or engineering technology with at least 2 years of technical, mechanical, or metallurgical experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology with technical, mechanical, or metallurgical experience preferred.
