Purpose

The Scrap Technician is responsible for ensuring the highest-value and safest scrap is delivered to the melt shop by inspecting incoming truck and railcar scrap loads. This role verifies conformance to Metallus scrap standards and manages the disposition of any non-conforming material. The Scrap Technician also ensures timely delivery of compliant scraps to support melt shop safety, protects furnace operations, and enhances throughput, chemistry control, and yield. Incoming scrap is segregated according to chemistry, size, density, and cost to optimize melt shop performance. The Scrap Technician will audit scrap piles to confirm accurate weights, density, yield, size, and chemistry classifications.  Additionally, the Scrap Technician supports the scrap loading and cutting teams, as well as logistics activities related to scrap deliveries, including internal material movement, Perry Scales operations, and rail coordination.

This position requires overtime and off shift availability based on business needs.

 

Responsibilities

  • Inspect incoming scrap to ensure and improve its quality and react accordingly to off-quality material.
  • Use XRF analyzer to audit scrap quality.
  • Communicate with department management team, scrap yard contractor, purchasing, and scrap suppliers when downgrading or rejecting out of compliance scrap.
  • Perform all internal documentation.
  • ork with scrap yard contractor to control the flow of railcars to eliminate demurrage and utilize lowest cost scraps.
  • Audit supplier scrap yards.
  • Oversee all aspects of scrap operations and ensure execution of the scrap yard contractor.
  • Provide a strong example of leadership through adherence to company, plant and department policies while promoting our core values.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School or equivalent with at least 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment. 
  • Associate Degree with at least 2 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Bachelor Degree with experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School or equivalent with at least 9 years of experience in a scrap yard or steelmaking function. 
  • Associate Degree with at least 6 years of experience in a scrap yard or steelmaking function.  
  • Bachelor Degree with at least 4 years of experience in a scrap yard or steelmaking function.
