Financial Controller - Inventory, Costing, and Manufactured Components

Purpose

The position plays a key role in supporting financial inventory control, cost accounting and the Manufactured Components business. It will provide management with a clear understanding of manufacturing performance which will allow for timely and informed decision making for the three Manufactured Components plants, product inventory costing and cost of sales.

 

This position requires a solid cost and manufacturing background and a focus on continuous improvement. Problem solving and initiative, with a strong desire to analyze, investigate, and resolve are essential elements for success in this position. The ability to communicate well across all levels of the organization is also key for this position.

 

Responsibilities

  1. Lead a team of accounting professionals by providing clear guidance, setting expectations, managing workload distribution, and ensuring timely completion of all responsibilities.
  2. Drive process optimization by eliminating inefficiencies and non-value-added tasks, while ensuring full compliance with accounting standards.
  3. Manage financial reporting and analysis for total cost of sales, providing variance explanations across multiple scenarios and collaborating closely with FP&A and Accounting.
  4. Oversee month-end close processes, including the review and approval of memos, journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations.
  5. Manage inventory management and accounting activities, including annual physical inventory completion, high-value adjustments, reporting and trend analysis, monitoring in-transit inventory balances, and managing processes such as Obsolete and Slow Moving Inventory (OSMI), Capitalized Inventory, and Lower of Cost or Market (LCM).
  6. Govern the standard cost-setting process across all Metallus plants—including Raw Materials, Long Product, and Manufactured Components—covering annual and bi-annual standard cost updates, ongoing costing support, and monthly variance analysis.
  7. Ensure monthly review of raw material and production variances that result in a write-offs to Shrinkage, confirming alignment with accounting standards and internal controls.
  8. Lead and partner with plant management to evaluate operational performance, including the preparation of monthly financial reports covering gross margin, supplier activity, cost center expenditures, and various ad hoc analyses.
  9. Oversee the development of the annual operating plan and ongoing financial forecasts for the Manufactured Components business.
  10. Manage the capital budget for the Manufactured Components business, including evaluation of project investment analyses and overseeing cash flow timing.
  11. Preside over quarterly and annual internal, external, and SOX audit processes, including analysis and certification of the 302 Certificate.

 

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Strong skills in systems such as - Excel, SAP, Maximo, Oracle, Hyperion Planning
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to solve complex problems
  • Execution oriented and rigorous in meeting performance commitments
  • Ability to work on cross functional teams including - Executive Leadership, Operations Leadership, and Finanace Leadership
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of Leaderhip and Corporate Finance team

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business with at least 10 years experience in manufacturing, inventory, cost accounting, and people management

or

Masters degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business with at least 8 years expereince in manufacturing, inventory, cost accounting, and people management

 

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business with at least 15 years experience in manufacturing, inventory, cost accounting, and people management

or

Masters degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business with at least 12 years expereince in manufacturing, inventory, cost accounting, and people management
