Purpose and Scope:
This position will be responsible for providing guidance and support across all Metallus sites in maintaining safety compliance with all internal and external requirements with a special emphasis on identifying opportunities to drive continuous improvement. This position will also be responsible for leading, guiding, and managing a safety and security team which includes salary and hourly union employees. This involves improving and leading employee engagement and accountability. This position will also support the sites operations, in-depth investigations, and the development of corrective actions.
A recognized manufacturing safety leader is needed who sets strategic direction and implements the tactical and systemic initiatives to lead an organization who is recognized as an industry leader in safety. The strategy will proactively focus on strengthening and institutionalizing all major systemic elements of safety performance. This manager also needs to have the ability to keep up with ever-changing safety laws and regulations to achieve and maintain compliance while minimizing the legal and economic exposure to the Company of failing to comply with safety laws. This position will develop, refine, and set standardization and effective implementation of programs and policies across all Metallus facilities in accordance with regulatory requirements.
As a leader, this position will use benchmarking, industry best practices, data analysis, and regulatory knowledge to drive decision making and action plan development for improvements. Strong leadership and internal collaboration are essential with manufacturing site management, employees, contractors, human resources, procurement, environmental, finance, legal, the union, and other business functions to systemically imbed safety in all aspects of conducting business strong leadership and development of plant safety professionals.
Responsibilities:
- Set business strategy to achieve world class industry excellence by utilizing education, experience, industry top practices, measures, and leading and lagging indicators. This will lead to:
- Becoming a recognized steel industry leader in health and safety metrics, both lagging and leading.
- Achieving the business goal of zero lost-time injuries and attaining a position of leadership in occupational safety.
- Eliminating the risk of occupational injury and illness to all employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Minimizing the legal, economical, and negative media exposure to Metallus with safety regulations.
- Promoting Metallus safety systems to the communities and trade organizations for which it serves.
- Overseeing the management of permits and licenses that pertain to health and safety as well as driving to develop the core competencies of corporate and plant/union safety representatives.
- Determine and communicate business and plant safety metrics.
- Presenting metrics with an assessment of business and plant safety performance with actions to drive improvement in performance.
- Using metrics and compliance initiatives to develop the annual business plan.
- Present safety details in front of the Board of Directors and actively engage with the executive leadership team on the company's safety culture, strategy and performance.
- Represent Metallus in matters of safety before the Department of Labor, OSHA, and local law enforcement agencies.
- Actively participate in industry association safety committees to effect fair and equitable legislation and regulations by obtaining and evaluating information on future safety management practices and programs.
- Provide safety expertise and improve awareness in business and with employees and contractors to help them become more aware of the objectives of the company’s health and safety policies.
- Developing awareness and training programs and oversight of such programs
- Advising on plant and equipment design and design of operations
- Continually devising and implementing awareness initiatives to create and maintain management and employee awareness.
- Manage and oversee the security, fire, and safety department of the organization. This includes an umbrella of various positions such as security, fire, and emergency medical personnel.
- Manage workers compensation and emergency preparedness programs.
Preferred Technical & Functional Skills:
- Proven leadership with expertise on standardization and change management
- Background in developing and maintaining effective relationships with union safety leaders
- Ability to effectively interact with all levels of executives, senior, and plant management
- Ability to inspire and influence teams in embracing a culture of continuous improvement and safety
- Ability to present guidance and direction to plant leadership in a technical and professional manner.
- Ability to establish new processes, collaborate well with employees and leadership, and focus on accountability and prioritizing.
- Technical education, basic sciences, and a strong background in safety and law regulations
- Knowledge of Health and Safety programs and regulations (OSHA, FRA, NRC, etc.)
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree with 15 years of experience in a manufacturing health & safety role including managing people for 10+ years.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree with 10 years of experience in a manufacturing health & safety role including managing people for 7+ years.
