Purpose:
Offer guidance and informed decision-making on safety, quality, and productivity concerns, covering failures, refractory replacement, equipment selection, and best practices for the Faircrest caster. Drive continuous improvement initiatives by collaborating with supervisors and hourly employees, serving as the area's authority on the safe and proper operation of all equipment. Lead change by challenging outdated practices, promoting data driven improvements, and ensuring clear communication across all levels of the organization to support alignment, accountability, and operational excellence.
Responsibilities:
- Accountable for driving initiatives to enhance quality and safety within this area.
- Create and maintain a safe work environment, includes decisions on correct personnel protective equipment, operational practices, hourly employee activities and techniques, and refractory practices.
- Direct supervisors and hourly personnel (production and maintenance) as necessary to accomplish department goals.
- Lead efforts for improvement in productivity and lower cost at the caster. Deliver annual improvements in productivity, costs, quality and service.
- Coordinate the efforts for the ongoing communication and plan execution between the operational and maintenance departments to assure world class equipment availability.
- Develop and provide training on new practices, processes, and equipment.
- Champion structured process improvement efforts by identifying inefficiencies, conducting root cause analyses, and implementing sustainable corrective actions that elevate safety, quality, and throughput.
- Serve as a catalyst for change by introducing new methods, reinforcing adoption, and ensuring consistent execution across shifts and teams.
- Facilitate strong communication across all levels—hourly employees, supervisors, maintenance, engineering, and leadership—to maintain alignment on priorities, risks, and performance expectations.
- Promote a culture of openness and accountability by encouraging feedback, sharing lessons learned, and reinforcing consistent standards across the operation.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma with at least 7 years of melt shop, steel mill, and/or casting experience.
- Associate's Degree in Metallurgy or Engineering with at least 4 years of melt shop, steel mill, and/or casting experience.
- Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgy or Engineering with at least 2 years of melt shop, steel mill, and/or casting experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in Metallurgy or Engineering with at least 9 years of melt shop, steel mill, and/or casting experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy or Engineering with at least 7 years of melt shop, steel mill, and/or casting experience.
